Due to ongoing deregulation and liberalization of energy markets, medium-term and long-term forecasts are indicating higher loads on cable networks and an increasing demand for diagnostic measurements requested by utilities and other operators of cable grids. Diagnostic measuring techniques are needed in order to assess the condition of the cable grid to ascertain the required maintenance requirements prior to catastrophic failure.
The measurement of Partial Discharge (PD) is a worldwide accepted tool of quality control, both in the laboratory and out in the field. PD phenomena, as defined by IEC 60270, are localized dielectric breakdowns of a small portion of a solid or liquid electrical insulation system under high voltage stress. The detection and monitoring of PD is of vital importance as PD phenomena often precedes an insulation breakdown, leading to cost-intensive repairs and outages. PD measurement is thus a major benchmark of the quality of cable and accessories and its on-site assemblage respectively.
The cables themselves are tested with a sensitive PD measurement. During manufacturing the cables are tested in screened laboratories where any PD faults are detected. During the on-site commissioning tests of power cable systems, the focus is primarily on the assembly work of cable accessories such as joints and terminations.
In the case of partial discharges, the PD fault position can be determined by analyzing the time delay of the different PD pulses arising from propagation and reflection. The common approach therefore is the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) in which PD signals and their reflections are measured at one end of the cable system.

MPD 600 – Next generation Partial Discharge analysis system
OMICRON's MPD 600 is a high-end, high-precision, modular acquisition and analysis toolkit for detecting, recording, and analyzing partial discharge events in many applications. The system uses the mtronix high-speed fiber optical network technology which allows, in addition to traditional single channel set up, synchronously measuring and monitoring partial discharges on every cable joint and termination along the cable system. This was successfully demonstrated in one of the world's largest commissioning test of a HV cable system with supervising 22 accessories per phase simultaneously.
Due to the optical isolation of the MPD 600, its operation is absolutely safe. With battery (or line Power) operation of the MPD 600 independent of the computer controller, this also reduces problems with electro magnetic interferences, as well as the elimination of ground currents.
For routine testing of cable length in the factory, a specialized easy-to-use software interface was developed to allow a semi-automatic PD fault location in the range of 30 cm or 1 foot when tests are conducted in a screened room. Test results can easily be integrated to customized reports by the MPD 600 REPORT generator.
