Grounding System Analysis

The grounding system of any high-voltage electrical system is the basis for personal, lightning, and EMC protection. It must therefore be carefully planned and dimensioned, correctly designed and then commissioned in line with applicable standards. Since large-scale grounding systems are not easy to access, they are often not given the attention they deserve and require.

In almost all countries, there are standards that stipulate checks of the grounding system at specified intervals, whether visual inspections after excavation or taking actual measurements. OMICRON has developed special measuring systems that are specifically designed for this kind of investigation, in particular of large-scale grounding systems.

Fall of Potential, Ground Resistance, and Ground Impedance

Voltage rises in the immediate area of electrical systems can have extremely dangerous consequences in the event of a fault. Visual checks of the grounding system generally offer little insight and are of limited usefulness. Significantly more reliable results can be obtained by measuring the ground impedance.

Measuring the Step and Touch Voltage

The most reliable method for determining the potential risk of personal injury is the step and touch voltage approach. OMICRON has developed an innovative measuring system that allows highly accurate measurements of the step and contact voltage.
