Protection systems play a key role in operating today's electricity power systems reliably and safely. This is relevant for all power system grids; generation, transmission and distribution, industrial, commercial, railway, or marine. To ensure correct operation of this vital power system element testing is required. Typical fault conditions as well as stable operating conditions, switching operations and logic schemes have to be simulated to ensure that the protection system works as specified before it’s put into operation. These tests have to be repeated after a certain amount of time due to the inactive nature of the protection devices during normal operating conditions. Consequently, routine tests make sure that the protection systems stay "in shape" over their life-cycle.
Today's challenges in protection testing are many. Often, all relay generations from electromechanical relays to the latest IEC 61850 compliant IEDs have to be managed within one utility. Ideally, one test set can cover tests for all relay generations. Modern multifunctional protection devices are very complex due to the high number of integrated functions. Furthermore, different vendors of protection systems have different operating philosophies and algorithms resulting in high learning and training investments for each new system that has to be dealt with.
OMICRON's protection testing hardware and software is designed to meet those challenges. Solutions for testing electromechanical relays, static relays, numerical relays, IEC 61850 IEDs, relay panels and distributed protection systems are provided. OMICRON's Protection Testing Library (PTL) helps to manage the complexity and variety of these different generations. Furthermore, the OMICRON PTL is visualizing the specific protection characteristics in vendor-independent software, providing the ready-made test plans within the PTL.

CMC 356
OMICRON's CMC 356 is a universal test set and commissioning tool. It comes with extremely powerful current amplifiers rated 6-phase, 0 - 32 A each (3 x 64 A), with more than 400 VA per channel. This makes the CMC 356 the perfect tool for testing all generations of relays – from electro-mechanical relays to all generations of numerical relays including IEC 61850 IEDs. Commissioning engineers choose this device due to its unique versatility that meets the diverse demands of commissioning modern substations.
CMC 256plus
OMICRON’s CMC 256plus is not only a test system, but also a universal calibrator with high accuracy. It is equipped with four voltage outputs (0 … 300 V) and six current outputs (0 ... 12.5 A or 3 x 25 A). The CMC 256plus is ideal for testing all generations and types of protection relays. It defines the state of the art for testing in IEC 61850 environments, supporting GOOSE messages and IEC 61850-9-2 LE
Sampled Values.
CMC 156
Thanks to its compact design and low weight of just 9.8 kg (22 lbs) OMICRON's CMC 156 is the perfect advanced three-phase test device for all tasks that require maximum portability. Providing three voltage (0 ... 125 V) and three current (0 ... 12.5 A) outputs, it is designed for testing numerical protection relays in modern substations and power plants, or CT/VT-connected meters. If more voltage, more current, more power or additional channels are required, it can be supplemented with external amplifiers.
