Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) or Sweep Frequency Analysis, as it is often referred to, is a powerful and sensitive method to evaluate the mechanical integrity of cores, windings and clamping structures within power transformers by measuring their electrical transfer functions over a wide frequency range. Each electrical network has got its unique frequency response, the so-called fingerprint. Faults, mechanical shocks (i.e. earthquakes) or transportation cause deviations of this frequency response. Comparing measurements of different phases, sister units or the actual fingerprint with earlier measurements done on the same transformers allows to indicate positional or electrical variations of the internal components. Experts recommend tests of the frequency response especially after the transport of transformers to site and following faults with high currents to ensure that the windings haven’t been damaged.

FRAnalyzer - Sweep Frequency Response Analyzer
By detecting mechanical and electrical changes of the core and the winding assembly OMICRON's FRAnalyzer offers a valuable opportunity to improve the reliability of transformers to reduce maintenance costs, and most of all, to avoid expensive unexpected outages. Due to its unique technique, the FRAnalyzer has outstanding repeatability.
