Testing with Communication Protocols

The application of communication protocols is rapidly spreading in the electric power industry. More and more applications in the substation utilize newest communication technologies for exchanging even mission critical information. New testing tools support the engineers and technicians to master these new technologies.

Test Modules and Utilities dedicated to IEC 61850
  • IEDScout

IEDScout is a universal client to IEC 61850 servers - such as substation IEDs - and a publisher/subscriber for GOOSE messages. It provides numerous useful functions needed in the substation or the laboratory.

  • GOOSE Configuration Module

The GOOSE Configuration Module configures a CMC test set for subscribing and publishing GOOSE messages

  • Sampled Values Configuration Module

The Sampled Values Configuration Module configures a CMC test set for publishing Sampled Values streams according to IEC 61850-9-2

  • GSSE Configuration Module

The GSSE Configuration Module configures a CMC test set for subscribing and publishing GSSE messages

IEC 61850 Test Sets

Test sets with IEC 61850 features that work with the GOOSE, Sampled Values, and GSSE Configuration are the CMC 256plus, the CMC 356, and the CMC 256-6 with NET-1 option.

Tools dedicated to IEC 60870-5-103
  • PTS 103

The protocol test system PTS 103 is a tool for monitoring, simulating and analyzing the "Protection Protocol" IEC 60870-5-103. A typical application for the protection engineer would be to test and verify the proper coordination of the protection functions and the messages issued on the communication link.
