The standard IEC 61850 describes the communication of devices in substations. One important issue relevant to protection specialists are the real time (process bus) protocols for transmitting binary status data.
GOOSE or GSSE messages transport binary status signals over the substation network and are also used for interlocking or even tripping. Sampled Values transport the digitized instantaneous values from CTs and PTs. For performance testing, the protection engineers need access to these data. This is accomplished by hardware and software components for the well proven OMICRON protection testing system.
A complementing software tool provides valuable information about the IEC 61850 devices by browsing them on-line or accessing their configuration data off-line.
- IEDScout
This software is a universal tool for working with IEC 61850 Devices. It serves many valuable functions for testing and troubleshooting, commissioning, and IED development. A free evaluation version can be downloaded.
- GOOSE and GSSE Configuration

Configuration software modules for subscribing to or simulating GOOSEs and GSSEs. These modules extend the use of the OMICRON Test Universe Software to protection testing to applications with IEC 61850 devices.
- Sampled Values Configuration

The Sampled Values Configuration module configures, enables, or disables the sampled values output of a CMC test set with the NET-1 option.
- IEC 61850 Test Sets

Test sets with IEC 61850 features that work with the GOOSE, Sampled Values, and GSSE Configuration are the CMC 256plus, the CMC 356, and the CMC 256 with NET-1 option.
