The application of communication protocols is rapidly spreading in the electric power industry. More and more applications in the substation utilize newest communication technologies for exchanging even mission critical information. New testing tools support the engineers and technicians to master these new technologies.
IEC 61850
IEC 61850, the standard for "Communication networks and systems in substations" utilizes network technologies for all kinds of information exchange within a substation. The communication system has become an integral part of the protection and control system. It provides several protocols for the different applications in the substation:
- Client/server protocol for SCADA
- GOOSE for real-time messaging between substation devices
- Sampled Values to transmit the data from CTs/VTs.
OMICRON provides a toolset for effective and in-depth testing in an IEC 61850 environment.
IEC 60870-5-103
The "protection protocol" IEC 60870-5-103 is widely used in many regions for connecting the protection devices to a SCADA system and delivering information about the status of the protection equipment to the control center. OMICRON's tools facilitate the connection to such communication links and support the analysis of the information flow, also with customized interpretation of the data mapping.
